New Mexico’s Shutdown Is Blatant Class Warfare
Governor Lujan-Grisham is not a heroic savior, she is a ruling class tyrant who doesn’t care how many lives she has to destroy to get a high score.
Today New Mexico has reinstated its draconian stay-at-home orders. As a result New Mexicans will lose their jobs, their businesses, access to healthcare and any momentum they have built in creating a meaningful life for themselves. Well, not all New Mexicans. If you’re rich and powerful, like Lujan-Grisham and her peers, none of this will apply to you.
Restrictions only apply to those without the resources to get around them. If you have money and connections, you can always find a way. Legal consequences are only a deterrent to those who cannot afford fines and fancy lawyers. So if you are part of New Mexico’s elite class, or an outsider wanting to travel to and from the state, you can afford the costs of quarantine, unlike those of us who have been out of work for most of 2020 and cannot afford two week hotel stays. For most of us New Mexico has now become a prison, but those with money have the keys in and out. Lujan-Grisham trumped Trump, by building a literal paywall around the state. So much for open borders. Soon we will have Texas kids in cages.
Not that most of us can really afford to leave. It isn’t like the shutdown came with a relief package to curtail the personal cost. Nope, you are on your own there folks. The governor could care less if you are broke and barely staying off the streets, so long as you don’t add to her new cases number, which is her ultimate arbiter of all things. Sure, you might die 20 years early as a result of the poverty, despair and healthcare deprivation that lockdown has imposed on you, but so long as you do not show up on her Covid case ledger — who cares? Who even cares that the conditions of lockdown might subtract more years of life than Covid itself, so long as that one single metric of well being is being fanatically adhered to with no regard for other existential issues?
This is class warfare. This is the ruling elite cherry-picking the advice of epidemiologists, while ignoring scores of other areas of expertise where warnings have been made about the potentially bigger problems prolonged shutdown can cause, for political posturing and gain. And indubitably from hubris and arrogance.
There is something that needs to be understood, and it is that we are not in control of things like this. Yes, there are some measures that can be taken to steer some events, but those might just be postponing the inevitable. Covid19 has not been with us long enough to understand. It might be persistent and resistant to vaccines. It could mutate faster than new vaccines can be concocted. This wildfire might just have to burn through humanity, which has happened many times in the past, leading to increased evolutionary adaptability of our species. And with human populations rapidly destroying the environment, this might be one of the more humane ways of curbing our endless growth before we kill ourselves and the planet with this insane survival and longevity obsession. We should not be so willing to surrender the quality of life for a bit more quantity, when quantity is also destroying us.
And we certainly should not believe that this is for our good. Right now private business ownership is dying, while large corporate chains are thriving. Their smaller competitors are dropping like flies, at the same time that their profit earnings are being distributed outside of our state — and even nation. The wealth gap was already a greater than ever before, and the way we are doing things here in New Mexico, it will be the final blow to the working class. And wait until we start to feel the criminal violence that comes with homelessness, mental health issues and desperation — which the lockdown is rapidly breeding.
But nevermind that, right, because we mindlessly obeyed one single scientific discipline and discounted all other risks coming from other kinds of scientists. We are so super smart. We care so much. Because only that one single thing matters — avoiding/surviving Covid. Enjoy a long slow death, devoid of joy, hope or meaning, New Mexico. You earned it. Player Lujan-Grisham got the high score in Covid and Class War.
