A new study by an independent journalism auditor estimates that nearly fifty percent of Medium’s content is produced through automation.

Ever wonder why when you open up your Medium newsfeed and begin scrolling it often looks like the same 2–3 articles written over and over again? Well if you have, that is because they just might be.

A recent study used an algorithm detector to see if Medium authors were authentic individuals, or programs designed to spew out the same message over and over with only slight variations. The results suggest that this is most likely the case.

Identity deference is the same old prejudices repackaged as virtues.

I am a straight white male. I acknowledge that historically non-straight, non-male and non-white persons have been screwed over by some straight white males. But I didn’t do it. And the aforementioned screwing probably didn’t happen to you. We’re all good, you and me.

And just as I acknowledge that it was absolutely wrong for the straight white guys to force everyone else to defer to them based on their identity, I am equally adamant that is just as wrong when reversed.

I will defer to no-one. If you want…

A new wave of racial fetishism and deterministic thinking threatens to recreate conditions in which bigotry thrives.

There are roughly seven trillion articles on Medium about how wrong it is to say things like, “I don’t see color, just people.” These articles are full of anger, outrage and awkward suggestions. I call bullshit.

I am certainly not colorblind, and nobody else is, either. Racial perceptions still influence our thoughts and behaviors, but the goal is to eradicate the cognitive habits of letting our thoughts and actions be led with skin color, is it not? Just as race should not negatively…

Thoughts from a police abolitionist in the wake of George Floyd’s heinous murder by law enforcement thugs.

There are a few things I need tell you right up front. First of all, I have been a police critic and activist for years. I was once editor and chief contributor of a major police criticism organization. For years almost every waking hour was consumed by studying these issues and tracking police abuse. I organized and attended protests and filmed police on the streets and at major events. I am not bragging here. I just want it to be clear that I…

Know Your Audience

Prospering as a public wordsmith is astonishingly easy if you cater your message to a pre-selected audience. Knowing who you will be writing for will help you overcome the uncertainty of original ideas, and allow you to focus on affirming what people already agree with. Telling people exactly what they want to hear is a surefire method of creating consensus for your written message. …

How to escape the scrutiny of the #MeToo movement by being too popular to fail.

The employers of Neil deGrasse Tyson, which include Hayden Planetarium, FOX and the Koch Brothers, have concluded their investigation into the allegations of sexual abuse made by three women. The findings of that investigation remain shrouded in secrecy, and SURPRISE, the Pat Robertson of televised pop science gets to keep his gigs.

So far I have heard no outcry from the #MeToo movement, and even outlets like Jezebel are only reporting the outcome, with no hint of skepticism that a secret internal investigation may not…

This morning I got my Medium earnings report for the month of October, a month in which I increased my reads by about one thousand percent and spent forty hours researching and writing articles that I thought might be more popular based on past stats. Despite this I earned less than three dollars. About a third of the maximum I have earned in any given month since I started writing here. Somehow I worked harder, improved my readership and earned even less. On top of that, most of my reads came from my own promotional work elsewhere in social media…

Hello friends, my name is Gerald Kent and I have been the mayor of Chillville for nine years. I love this community like it is my very own family, each and every one. In my second year of leadership there were two unfortunate incidents with our law enforcement branch that got people discussing the necessity of a traditional police department here in Chillville. What we have accomplished in the years since has been nothing less than phenomenal. But first, let me tell you about our town.

Chillville is more or less your average American community. There are about 23,ooo residents…
