Science does have a supernatural agency. It has been depersonalized and called Nature, but the function is the same. It is an omnipresent, omnipotent regulator of existence. All religion starts from the same belief, from polytheism to science — that the contents of observation are caused by something external to observers.
Quantum mechanics has indeed gone beyond that, but the overwhelming majority of science rejects the observer-created interpretation because it would undermine not just their claims, but science itself. The scientific method assumes realism/physicalism at its very core. Logical positivism assumes them, too. Science is the study of phenomena unto themselves. When you realize nothing is unto itself, all you can study are how your own beliefs and expectations affect observations, which becomes something entirely different than science. The entire enterprise of 'knowing' constitutes and arrogance based on assumptions, which inevitably always leads to authority and control. “This is how things are, so this is how you should behave.” That was the obvious stance of theism for centuries, but is only now becoming clear to people that science operates the same way, under an expectation of obedience.
